Chapter Twelve
Samantha opened her eyes and groaned. Her head ached. Her whole body ached. She made to rub the sleep from her eyes and stopped. She couldnât move them, as though she had pins and needles and her muscles had gone to sleep. She tried to turn over onto her side and couldnât do that either. Her legs were just as dead.
âWhat the fuck?â she muttered.
She tried to sit up, to see what was wrong, but her arms refused to budge. Then, when she turned her head to look, she cried out in shock. Samantha cried again when she saw her feet tied to the bedposts.
âWhat the fuck is this? Mum!â she called.
She wriggled, strained to free herself, but it was impossible. The knots were too tight.
Okay, think Sam. What the hell happened?
All she could recall was watching her parents having sex, finding it highly amusing, then she had gotten horny herself. After that was a complete blank.
She called her mum again, louder. When no one came up the stairs to answer her calls, waves of panic began to swim up her body. What ifâ¦What if something had gotten to them? Was perhaps tearing their throats out at that very moment? What if they staggered upstairs to where she lay as their prisoner and started on her? Torture her to death slowly, a nibble on her cheek here, a bite of her throat there.
She rocked and writhed on the bed, twisting and turning as much as she was able to, pulling as hard as she could at the ropes. After five minutes of constant struggling, she gave up and lay back, straining to hear what might be going on downstairs and hearing nothing, unsure if that was a good thing. But really, why would the zombies have tied her up anyway? Surely, they werenât that intelligent to save the dessert for later.
Then, a voice spoke in her head. A voice she recognized from before.
Fight. We need you. Break free and come to us. We are dying.
âBut how?â she cried. âHow am I supposed to break out?â
Remember what you are. Who you are.
It made no sense. Who I am? The fuck did that mean?
She tugged again at the ropes, tried to kick back with her legs, but it was useless.
âI canât,â she yelled.
But there was something else, too. Images in her mind of floating, hurling someone across the landing or hallway, her mother screaming and trying to hit her. What was that all about?
Then, her vision darkened as though a heavy cloud was passing across the sun, obscuring everything. Her body shook. She felt more alive than ever and knew that she could free herself if she wanted to. A word echoed in her head, bouncing off the walls of her skull, her brain.
Daemonium.
Samanthaâs body rose horizontally from the bed until her back arched dangerously backwards. There were four sharp pings as the ropes holding her arms and legs snapped. She continued floating along until she reached the window, then her body angled forty-five degrees until she was standing on her feet.
